Wake Up and Smell the Bacon

29 Feb

Wake n' Bacon alarm clock

This cracks me up. It has to be some sort of health code violation, but I still love it. And actually, one of my fondest memories from growing up was waking up to the smell of my grandma cooking bacon when we’d go to visit her in Indiana. So this is really just the a next-gen version of that.

Flying Babe

28 Feb

Photographer Rachel Hulin took pictures of her little boy flying through the air in various locations, and it’s just hilarious to see that chubby little baby body suspended in the air.

But don’t worry about Henry:  “I never throw him, and I never move him into a place in the frame that he wasn’t in to begin with,” Hulin told My Modern Met. “I like Henry to fly the way he feels like it, I never pose him in a specific way. Sometimes he’s graceful and sometimes he’s a little hunchback. I think telling you more would ruin it.”

Face to Face With Literature

27 Feb

Edward Rochester, Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë - from The Composites

Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald - from The Composites

As much as I love seeing my favorite books make it to the big screen, it is sometimes hard to reconcile my own envisioning of a particular character with Hollywood’s. Case and point: the Twilight series.

So I’m slightly intrigued yet slightly wary of this tumblr feed created by Brian Joseph Davis that uses law enforcement composite sketch software to create mug shots of famous literary characters.

I think I’d be more on the intrigued and delighted end of the spectrum if the software didn’t make everyone look like descendents of Gollum from Lord of the Rings. Luckily I don’t have a strong affinity for any of the characters featured so far.

Regardless, it’s a fascinating and thoughtful project, so it technically meets “smitten” standards :). Learn more about the project and creator Brian Joseph Davis in this video feature from the BBC.

Have you guys seen The Artist? I thought this poster was genius.

Jeans That Fit Like A Glove?

22 Feb

INDi Custom Jeans

INDi Custom Jeans

When it comes to bathing suits and jeans, I almost never find the perfect match for my body type, personal style, fit … the list goes on. Full disclosure: I end up wearing the same two pairs of jeans everywhere!

So I’m very excited about this little deal from Daily Candy that landed in my inbox this morning. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a website that lets you design your own jeans to match all of those picky areas (fit, style, etc.) I mentioned above, but it sounds like heaven. I must admit, the regular price of $185 is a lot more than I normally spend on jeans, but the Daily Candy deal makes them a steal.

Still skeptical? Just pop on over to INDi’s website and try it out. I was amazed at how in-depth the questions are. Now,  if only there were one of these for bathing suits …

Oh, and guys, they have jeans for you, too!

The Perfect Pity Party

21 Feb

When I’m feeling blue, there’s nothing I like better than cocooning myself in my room with some of my favorite things–How I Met Your Mother episodes on Netflix, Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice-cream, treats from BabyCakes, extra-comfy pajamas–and just distracting myself for the evening. It works like a charm.

Kate had a similar idea when she posted about how to throw yourself a pity party, but hers is a pitch-perfect visual of how to do it with some style and some cheekiness. And she adds, “Over the years I’ve realized that wallowing in self-pity is just a pitstop on your way to accepting the bad things that happen to you. So why not have a little fun with it? Soon enough you’re looking towards better things.”

So true. What makes you feel better when you’re down?

Classic Couples

16 Feb

Just wanted to send you off for the weekend with this great collection of classic couples that Design Is Mine put together. I have to admit that while I’m totally smitten with Paul and Joanne, I will forever be fascinated by Bonnie and Clyde. It’s twisted, I know, but nothing beats a bad-ass romance.

Have a great weekend, everyone! xx

The Next Best Thing To Robert Redford

16 Feb

It’s 9:30 AM, I just had a big breakfast, and I could stuff my face silly with this dessert right now. What is it, you ask? A magical combination of vanilla-chocolate pudding and homemade whipped cream atop a buttery cookie crust, known as The Next Best Thing To Robert Redford. Yup, that’s the real name and it looks like it’s most certainly going to live up to it.

When I hear “animal photographer” I tend to think of the images that normally grace the pages of things like greeting cards and kitten calendars, certainly not artfully crafted and character driven portraits. However, that’s just what Seth Casteel of Little Friends creates. An animal photographer like none other, his portraits make me forget that I’m looking at animals and make me think instead “what’s going through his mind right now?” And these are dogs we’re talking about.

Just take a look. You’ll see what I mean. You’ll find some portraits on Casteel’s website, but I found his site a bit hard to navigate. If you’re like me, you’ll have better luck on Facebook. (Check out the underwater shots. They’re both awesome and a bit frightening.)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day, guys! Whether your relationship status is photo #1 or photo #2 today, I hope it’s a fun day filled with good company and delicious treats. My office went pretty big for Valentine’s Day, so my tummy has been thoroughly stuffed with cupcakes, truffles, and chocolate cake. This sugar high should happily carry me through the evening. Hope it’s been a wonderful day for you all. xx

p.s. an incredible love story of how a Franciscan monk and a nun fell in love.
