Last week, LACMA opened a new, fascinating exhibit on female surrealists in its newish Resnik Pavilion. I checked it out over the weekend and was shocked to see how empty it was – especially considering the beauty and fierceness of the works on display. Artwork by Frida Khalo and Lee Miller, a former Vogue model and wartime photographer (how’s that for a job history!), among many others showcase the amazing introspection and thoughtfulness that went into works of that genre. And the curators did a wonderful job of showing how these artists used their lives and many times inner demons as inspiration for their art – a fact that very much differentiates them from their male surrealist counterparts.
It’s very much worth a look. The exhibit runs through May 6 and admission is $20.
