Short Reads

I READ It's A Passion Print - ParadaCreations on Etsy

When looking for a new book, I sometimes unfairly pass over the short story collections. Don’t get me wrong; I love a good short story, I just often forget just how enjoyable they can be. And like a slow song is sometimes the hardest to play, I often feel that a short story must be the hardest to write. Probably because I have trouble even writing short blog posts. (Case in point.)

That’s one of the many reasons why I absolutely love this idea from publisher Harper Perennial called Fifty-Two Stories. It’s an online collection of user-submitted short stories inspired by a preselected theme. (This year’s theme is ASK.) Harper Perennial selects one story to publish on the website each week and archives the lot. The current archives go all the way back to January 2009, so I have a lot to catch up on.

Fifty-Two Stories is definitely going on my must-read list. Maybe I’ll even be inspired to submit my own short story if I can stand to let go of 1,000 words or so.
